3D in Pre-production?

Thought that this video highlighted something pretty fascinating in regards to the recent 'fad' of making films in 3D. Mostly, the process has been met with wide negativity, with only the likes of Avatar exercising it's true potential. This current production blog of The Hobbit explains Director Peter Jackson's use of the 'RED' Camera, with potential new leaps in how 3D can be filmed. Look at around the 8:25sec mark for the most intriguing display of 'new thinking' with Pre-production illustration from artists John Howe and Alan Lee. Just a gimmick, or does it have potential?
